Health Benefits of the Different Types of Fibre
Fibre can only be found in foods of plant origin. it is the edible but indigestible matter found in leaves, stems, fruits, seeds and roots.
Soluble fibres include inner pea fibre, pectin, guar gum, inulin and resistant starch. They are fermented in the colon by colonic bacteria.
Insoluble fibres include outer pea fibre, cellulose and corn fibre. They are generally poorly fermented and are excreted, to a large extent, intact.
Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are found in many edible fruits and vegetables, such as onion, garlic, asparagus, wheat, banana, etc. FOS are expecially helpful in increasing intestinal bifidobacteria thus helping to maintain a good intestinal environment.
